What to Expect
Experience the striking beauty of World Heritage-listed Halong Bay. After a drive through the rural villages of northern Vietnam we arrive at the bay and board a private Chinese junk. Set sail through turquoise waters dotted with over 3,000 magnificent limestone islands. Explore the many karsts and enjoy a seafood buffet while taking in the bay’s mystical scenery.
Your Halong Bay tour begins with a 3.5-hour drive from the hectic pace of life in Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi, to the tranquil and beautiful Halong Bay. En route you will stop at the Hong Ngoc Humanity Center, a handicraft outlet developed to provide support to communities in the area including people with disabilities.
On arrival in Halong City you will board your private boat for a cruise in Halong Bay, famous for its limestone karsts jutting out of the green waters creating a spectacular vista as nearly 2000 islands fill the bay. A UNESCO-listed World Heritage site since 1994, Halong Bay means “Bay of the Descending Dragon” and legend has it that a long time ago, when the Vietnamese were fighting off foreign invaders, the gods sent a family of dragons to assist in the fight. During the battle, the dragons spat out jewels that would later become the islands that are now scattered around the bay.
After a welcome drink, you will have the chance to enjoy a seafood lunch on board while cruising among the breathtaking scenery – what a way to spend the day!
Your Halong Bay cruise takes you to explore some of the grottos or caves that have formed in many of the islands that fill Halong Bay. You will also drop in on a fishing village and learn more about the culture and customs of the local inhabitants.
In the late afternoon, you will return to Hanoi by road, where you will have the chance to reflect on the day’s activities.
This trip is offered on a “join-in” basis. Maximum group size is 12.
When packing be aware that dress standards are conservative throughout Asia, especially outside major cities. To respect this and for your own comfort, we strongly recommend modest clothing. This means clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot Asian climate. In many rural areas in Asia women will need to wear modest clothing even to swim. Singlets, tank tops and topless sun bathing are all unacceptable. When visiting religious sites men often need to wear long trousers and women a long skirt or sarong.
If you are happy with the services provided by your local guides and drivers a tip – though not compulsory – is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid Urban Adventures destinations. Please consider this when budgeting for your extra expenses on this trip.
